Starting Out- What’s In It For Me?

The modern climber has more alternatives nowadays than hauling massive amounts of gear up sheer cliff faces. Indoor climbing has rapidly become one of the fastest growing sports in the world, and it’s all thanks to improved accessibility, lightweight equipment, and the ease of being instantly ready to attack an artificial wall in a safe and controlled indoor environment.

Climbing isn’t only a physical workout, it’s a mental one too! The amazing feeling of reaching the top of your first wall is one you will never forget; the drop beneath you, the applause from below and an adventure shared with your friends.

People come to The Summit indoor climbing and activity Centre and climb for many reasons. For some it's the physical and mental challenge of making that move they previously thought was impossible. For others, it’s the health benefits. Did you know that climbing produces a massive balanced improvement in muscle tone and vastly improved balance and flexibility? A single half hour session of climbing burns 300 calories and works pretty much every muscle group in the body!

You will quickly feel your confidence increase as you learn to overcome the challenges of the vertical world. For whatever reason you start, the one thing all climbers share is that ear to ear grin of exhilaration at the end of a day's climbing.

Climbing is also one of the most inclusive sports around, and a great way to meet like-minded people. Don’t be deceived into thinking you need arms like Arnie to climb either! Most climbs reward good balance, footwork and technique over sheer strength, meaning that women, with their naturally lower centre of balance and better flexibility, can progress very quickly indeed.

Climbing also greatly improves focus and discipline. One of the best things (unless you’re entered into one of our frequent competition climbs) is that you're not competing against anyone except yourself; you set your own targets and try your best.

So give us a call at The Summit indoor climbing and actvity Centre and get ready to give it a go! It could be one of the best decisions you ever make…for both mind and body!
